All competitive grocery shoppers are jumping over their sofas as they prepare for action once again. Supermarket Sweep, the iconic grocery-store themed game show from the ’90s, is back on Netflix.
On Monday, July 9, the streaming platform confirmed that it added 15 episodes of the classic game show that originally aired from 1965 to 1967 before being revived by other networks in the 1990s and early 2000s. The internet is going wild over the news and the users are filled with nostalgia.
Fans of Supermarket Sweep vividly remember the show for the unusual fashion of the ’90s and contestants running around frantically, rummaging through each aisle of the supermarket in search of very specific things in order to win huge prizes. Grocery shopping had never been more exciting and competitive.
The show follows a pretty simple format, but it is enameled with tons of competitive spirit. There are three teams of two- usually friends, spouses or siblings. Each team has to answer some trivia questions in order to accumulate time that they then use for a Major Sweep! In the accumulated time they have to run around a grocery store and fill their carts with the priciest or most desirable of items. Maybe an expensive piece of meat or a massive wheel of cheese.
The team that will win the “Major Sweep” will get a chance to go to the final round, a scavenger hunt of sorts that yields its winner a cash prize and eternal Supermarket Sweep glory.
Maybe this show is comforting because this lockdown has kept us away from the buzz of the supermarkets for longer than we can imagine, and, it is always fun to watch somebody’s mom carrying a heavy piece of ham and running around in the supermarket like an absolute maniac with her crazy ’90s hairstyle.
It is almost as if these television producers rummaged through our minds and gave us what we needed the most. A beacon of hope, if I may say so, in the midst of the global crisis of the century.
Supermarket Sweep reboot!!
For those who have already binge-watched the first fifteen episodes of the show, we have some good news for you too. A reboot of the iconic show is currently under production and Leslie Jones is set to host and executive-produce. There are more episodes coming.
In a statement, the Saturday Night alum made her views overt –
I’ve always dreamed of being on Supermarket Sweep… Seriously, I tried out for the show years ago; and after getting turned away, I knew I’d have to take matters into my own hands. Bringing the iconic game show back to life on ABC is my ultimate redemption story!
However, the production work which was likely to begin in Spring was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic. This makes it unclear when the new episodes will air. Currently we are all doing our own version of Supermarket Sweep by hurriedly collecting the necessary items and coming out of the crowd without being breathed on by somebody careless enough to not wear a mask.
