Unfortunately, for Outlander fans, the drought period between the last season and the next one is expected to extend. You can blame it all to the COVID-19 pandemic. But it is certain that Outlander season 6 is on the way. The renewals for Outlander Season 5 and 6 were announced together which left the fans head over heels in anticipation and excitement.
Outlander Season 6 officially announced
The series producer, Starz, announced the renewal for two more seasons i.e. season 5 and season 6 on May 9, 2018.
This assured the fans of the return of their beloved Claire and Jamie who will be facing new challenges, adversaries and adventures. This season will delve deeper into American history and continue with the story of the Frasers as they settle in the New World.
When asked by a fan, actor Sam Heughan confirmed that they had started working on Season 6 before the finale of season 5 was even aired.
This was further confirmed by Caitriona Balfe’s reply to a fan. She said that the writers were still at work regarding future episodes.
Pandemic thwarted the production
The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has affected the production which has been suspended till Autumn this year.
Heughan tweeted on May 3:
We were supposed to start this week…We have scheduled for Fall. Will just have to see…
More recently, there was news that the producers are working out a way for the cast and crew members to get back to filming of Outlander Season 6.
Nevertheless, we can assume that Season 6 will not air until middle of 2021. This is since season 5 only premiered in February 2020. Although Starz like to keep renewing, no new seasons for the series has been confirmed after season 6.

Season 6 plot
Outlander Season 6 is going to have the same number of episodes as the previous season i.e. 12.
The series is based on Diana Gabaldon’s book series of the same name. Prior to season 5, each season has been loosely based on one book of the Outlander series. But season 5 covered storylines from both The Fiery Cross and A Breath of Snow and Ashes. A fresh approach has been cited as the reason for this by the production team.
It is possible, and most expected, that Outlander Season 6 will cover the rest of A Breath of Snow and Ashes. However, it is likely that it will also include parts of Gabaldon’s seventh book, An Echo in the Bone.
There are a lot of loose ends to which an answer is sought in Outlander season 6. Will Marsali feel guilty for injecting the poison? Will Brianna try to meet her newfound half-brother William?
The last season also saw Claire being physically and sexually assaulted by a group of men before her husband saved her. But she does not want to let this shatter her.
Season 6 will follow the answers to these questions and a transformation in Claire.
Apart from this, there is plenty of source material for the seasons to come. Gabaldon is currently working on her ninth novel of the Outlander series, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone.
Outlander Season 6: Cast
Assuming no change in the main cast we can expect these favourites to return:
- Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser
- Catriona Balfe as Claire Randall Frase
- Richard Rankin as Roger Wakefield
- Sophie Skelton as Brianna Randall
However, the return of Duncan Lacroix is doubtful after his character, Murtagh Fraser, was killed. Stay tuned for more updates.
