If your answer is ‘yes’ then we can be great F.R.I.E.N.D.S. and talk about my Crazy Ex-Grirlfriend while we are at The Office.

Maybe it’s the hilarious gimmicks and pranks that the characters play on one another and the romance that keeps them together. Maybe it is the love triangles and awkward moments that catches our interest. Sigh not for we have listed the best rom-com shows of all time. Choose whatever suites your appetite from this grand buffet of rom-com shows.

F.R.I.E.N.D.S

Cast: Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer

Premise:
Friends is an American rom-com television series from Netflix that aired from 1994 to 2004. The premise is built around six friends Rachel, Ross, Monica, Chandler, Joey and Phoebe. Monica and Ross are siblings. The series abounds in situation comedy with many on again off again relationships between the characters.

Each character has some unique peculiarities that makes them funny. Like Ross gets married and divorced multiple time in the series, Joey is dim-witted and Chandler has a legendary flair for jokes. Phoebe is an erratic masseuse while Monica is a chef. At the beginning of the series, Rachel can be seen running away, in a wedding gown, from her own wedding.

The show was a great success and received acclaim throughout its run, becoming one of the most popular shows of all time. The series got a lot of nominations such as 62 times for the Primetime Emmy Awards and it also won the Outstanding Comedy Series award in 2002.

How I Met Your Mother

Premiered: 2005
Cast: Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris, Alyson Hannigan

Premise: The series follows the adventures of Ted Mosby as he narrates the story of how he met the mother of his children. The story goes into a flashback where his friends Marshall, Lily, Barney and robin become a part of the narrative. As the story develops through different storylines, a will-they or won’t-they relationship surfaces between Robin and the two single men, Ted and Barney.

While the traditional love story structure begins when the romantic leads first encounter each other, How I Met Your Mother does not introduce Ted’s wife until the eighth-season’s finale and only announces her name  during the series finale. The show instead focuses on Ted’s prior relationships and his dissatisfaction with those women, thus setting the stage for his eventual happiness with Tracy. Finally, six years after the death of Tracy, Ted returns back with Robin.

Known for its unique structure, humor, and incorporation of dramatic elements, How I Met Your Mother was popular throughout its run. The show won 10 of the 30 Emmy awards it was nominated for.

The Big Bang Theory

Cast: Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar

Premise: The Big Bang Theory is an American television sitcom created by Bill Prady and Chuck Lorre. The show originally centered on five characters living in Pasadena: Leonard and Sheldon, both physicists at Caltech, who share an apartment; Penny, a waitress who wants to be an actress; Howard, an aerospace engineer and Raj an astrophysicist, who are friends with Sheldon and Leonard.

All the nerdy characters are socially awkward which adds a comical spin to the series. Being a show full of nerdy characters, the show is bound to put up some nerdy jokes, for which the script writers are assisted by professors from Caltech. A romantic relationship develops between characters in the show of which the most emphasised one is that of Leonard and Penny. The show also features cameos from notable scientists such as Neil deGrasse Tyson and Stephen Hawking.

The show has received mixed reviews from the audience throughout its run and was even criticised for decreasing comic standards over seasons. Eventually the show managed to achieve the number 1 position among most popular shows of the time.

New Girl

Premiered: 2011
Cast: Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Max Green field

Best rom-com shows of all time

Premise: The series revolves around a quirky teacher, Jess, after she moves into a Los Angeles loft with three men, Nick, Schmidt, and Winston; Cece is another character who plays the role of Jess’ best friend. The show combines comedy and drama elements as the characters, who are in their early thirties, deal with their maturing relationships and career choices. New Girl is produced by Elizabeth Meriwether Pictures and 20th Century Fox Television in collaboration and syndicated by 20th Television.

The show received favourable reviews from the critics and was named one of the best rom-com shows of the 2011 fall season. The show has been nominated for several awards, including five Primetime Emmy Awards and five Golden Globe Awards .

The Mindy Project

Premiered: 2012
Cast: Mindy Kaling, Chris Messina, Ike Barinholtz, Beth Grant

Premise: The series follows obstetrician/gynecologist Mindy Lahiri as she tries to balance her professional and personal life, surrounded by eccentric co-workers in a small medical practice in New York City. For Kaling’s character, her own mother was the inspiration.

Mindy along with her co-workers: Danny Castellano, her best friend explores life and love interest in the show, whose religious sensibilities occasionally cause some tension; Jeremy Reed, manages the practice, he is an English physician; Peter Prentice, another physician and fraternity jock; Morgan Tookers, a wacky, yet lovable nurse who is also an ex-con; Tamra Webb, a blunt nurse; and Beverley, the lustful older office receptionist.

The show’s lead actress Mindy Kaling has received quite a few awards and been nominated several times for different awards.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Premiered: 2015
Cast: Rachel Bloom, Vincent Rodriguez III, Santino Fontana

Premise: While running away from her office building in panic, Rebecca, a Yale- and Harvard-educated real-estate lawyer bumps into Josh, her boyfriend from the summer camp, whom she hasn’t seen since her teenage years. Josh tells her that he is moving out of New York City, back to his hometown in California and Rebecca decides to follow him in search of happiness (Who does that!?).

After coming to West Covina, she finds a job at Darryl Whitefeather’s West Covina law firm and rents an apartment. Moreover, she also flushes all her depression and anxiety meds down the sink. The firm’s paralegal, Paula, and her neighbor, Heather become her friends and she also begins an on-again-off-again relationship with Josh’s friend Greg.

Rebecca and Josh try to consolidate their troubled relationship through marriage but Josh leaves her at the altar. Rebecca’s mental health plummets terribly. Meanwhile she engages in a casual sexual relationship with one Nathaniel Plimpton. Now Rebecca must choose between Josh, Greg and Nathaniel.

The show consistently drew low ratings throughout its four-season run while recieving rave reviews from the critics and many notable awards. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend was chosen by Margaret Lyons from The New York Times as the best TV show of 2017.
